Concern Over Medical Data Recording and Cybersecurity Risks

Summary

This wasn’t as recent, but I wanted to talk about this.

During a doctor’s visit in October 2025, I was asked whether the clinic could record my appointments for treatment quality and efficiency purposes. At first, I agreed, slightly flustered, but after reflecting on potential privacy risks, I opted out at the next visit. Frederick Health, where the visits took place, has previously experienced cyberattacks, which raised concerns about how securely these audio recordings might be stored or accessed.

Frederick Health experienced a ransomware attack on Jan 27th, 2025. I remember because my friend was there at the time it happened, and she described the event as very chaotic, as it took major systems offline for a little bit. The healthcare industry carries a LOT of sensitive data, and one cyber attack could compromise so many lives.

Reflection

I think cyber attacks on hospitals are very tragic. At that point, attackers are not dealing with digital information, but with lives as well.

I’m not saying anyone should pull their information from hospitals and burn it all. You should be able to trust your hospital to keep your information safe, but cyber attacks can happen anytime and to anyone. Maybe I am paranoid, but I believe it’s better to be safe than sorry.
